Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are complementary strategies, not competing ones. SEO focuses on ranking your website in traditional search results. AEO focuses on making your content easier for AI-powered answer systems to understand, verify, and sometimes cite. In 2026, you need both.

What is SEO

SEO is the established practice of optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). It covers technical factors (page speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability), content factors (relevance, keywords, heading structure), and authority factors (backlinks, domain reputation).

SEO remains an important acquisition channel because people continue to use search for research, comparison, navigation, and buying decisions. Why you need both

SEO and AEO are not mutually exclusive. In fact, strong SEO foundations - fast pages, clean HTML, relevant content - directly support AEO. The additional step for AEO is adding structured data, Q&A formatting, and entity signals that AI models specifically look for.

A website optimized for both SEO and AEO has a stronger foundation for traditional search and AI-powered discovery. Ignoring either layer can make competitors easier to find, understand, and trust.

Consider a local bakery. SEO helps it compete for "best bakery in Auckland." AEO makes the page clearer for answer systems by stating the bakery name, location, opening hours, sourdough availability, review proof, and Google Business Profile consistency. That does not guarantee an AI mention, but it gives systems better evidence than a vague homepage.

How to get started with both
